Have you ever thought about the fact that a driveway is one of the first things your guests notice when they enter your home? A good driveway can last you 24 years so it is important to take all factors into consideration instead of just going with your cheapest option.

The Options:

Gravel - the most basic and cheapest type. There are many choices of crushed stone so you can achieve a different color or look from your neighbor. This is a more high-maintenance option as you will need to replenish the rocks and rake occasionally to keep the rocks from getting into your grass. Also factor in how difficult shoveling snow in the winter off gravel is!

Concrete - the most popular, if you want to spend a little more you can have the surface "stamped" which can add color and texture! Concrete lasts longer than asphalt and is low-maintenance. On average, this driveway will cost you about $7,400 (according to Angie's List).

Asphalt - the other most popular and very basic. This is one of the cheapest option and it is the easiest to repair. The cost to install asphalt is about $5,300.

Paver - this is a great option if you want to make your home blend in with a walkway. Paver driveways take about two days to instal, but are ready right when they are done unlike asphalt. This option will last you about 25 years and it looks very nice, but the bricks may shift over time.

Whichever you choose, make sure you hire a professional to do the job. Be wary of people who say they have "leftovers" and is offering you a big discount. Many times asphalt or cement that is left over from a previous job has cooled too much and therefore won't be as good of a driveway and require replacement sooner!
