HOMES FOR OUR TROOPS

Homes For Our Troops mission is to build and donate specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post 9/11 Veterans, to enable them to rebuild their lives. Maves Construction and Coldwell Banker Distinctive Angels teamed up to provide Army SPC Steven Baskis with a new home in Montrose, CO.

On May 13, 2008, Army Specialist Steven Baskis, an Infantryman, was on a patrol as part of the personal security detachment for division leadership with Delta Company, Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Division in Baghdad, Iraq, when an explosively formed penetrator (EFP) detonated next to his vehicle. The blast resulted in the complete loss of his vision, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and nerve damage to his left arm. The explosion also killed his teammate and friend, Staff Sergeant Victor Cota, who was sitting next to him in the vehicle.

This was the first time Maves Construction, owned by Michael Maves, has teamed with HFOT. He designed and built this completely adapted home--including zero threshold doorways and shower, and phone-activated temperature controls for Baskis. Hank Galbreath, CFRE Major Gifts Officer at Homes For Our Troops said, "I wish we could partner with Maves for all our Colorado builds."

In August over 65 volunteers worked in conjunction with Coldwell Banker Distinctive Angels program to complete landscaping. On Saturday, Sept 22nd, Baskis received the keys to his new home. A huge thank you to Valerie Meyers from the Montrose office of Coldwell Banker Distinctive Properties; Kelly Maves and Jimmy Kleager from the Grand Junction Office of CBDP; Michael Maves and Maves Construction for your efforts in this project.
