6 Things to Know Before you Build your Deck
1. Get a permit
Make sure to look into your local building codes before you start building (or make sure your Grand Junction builder knows the codes). The permit will not only keep your family safe as they use the deck, but it will also help you get a better ROI and make sure you don't run into problems when you try to sell your home.
2. Learn about the different type of materials
Wood is the traditional and most common choice, however composite decking is gaining in popularity. Although it is more money up front, it saves you money and time since you don't need to replace or stain it over and over again.
3. Make sure you have a solid base
This is when the codes will come in handy as you learn the necessary requirements for the depth of your footings. It should go without saying, but make sure this is properly installed!
4. A level ledger
Another important component to a solid, safe and level deck is a level ledger. This is where the deck will connect to your house and is a large beam (usually a 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12).
5. Square the support frame
The next step is to have the joists attached squarely and set properly for the structure of the deck. Be 100% certain your measurements are accurate!
6. Choosing your fasteners
There are a lot of different fastener options such as nails or screws, but make sure they are deck nails and screws and can handle the elements!
