When it is time to replace your old windows with modern windows?

When is it time to replace your windows?

If you have an older home, you know the appeal of keeping those older, antique windows, however if they are rotting, jammed or making your energy bills much higher than they should be it may be time to replace them instead of just repairing. If your window frames are intact you will pay about $300 to $700 per window. Custom windows are much more expensive, coming in at around $1,000 per window. If you need to replace the window frame as well, factor in about twice as much per window.

Can't I just repair them?

If you have a historic home, one thing to look into before you make your decision is if there are local building codes restricting window replacement and/or modification. If that's the case, your decision has already been made, and historically-accurate replacements are going to be EXTREMELY expensive (like $1,000 per window). If sustainability is important to you, repairing may also be a good option as it cuts down on the energy consumption associated with manufacturing as well as the waste.

Okay, I am convinced to go with new modern windows. Tell me more!

Modern windows are becoming increasingly more popular which makes sense as natural light and open space becomes more desirable in homes. The advantage of modern windows is you can have a larger window that is double- or triple-glazed (meaning they have two or three layers of glass rather than one), while still keeping your energy bill low. Here are some modern, popular, trends in the window market:

1. Big, semi-circular palladium windows

Instead of just simply replacing your windows in the current frame, some people are opting for expanding windows or adding more. Installing semi-circular palladium windows on top of traditional rectangular windows and skylights are becoming increasingly more popular as technology has advanced and people are looking to add creative ways to add in natural light.

2. Vinyl windows

This isn't a new trend, but it is popular for a reason. When you decide to paint your home, windows are one of the most expensive factors. By having vinyl windows, you will not need to paint the frame, saving you 30-50% on the project cost.

3. The window sash

This is important to consider when installing windows. If you are looking for the most energy-efficient windows, opt for windows that don't open at all. These shouldn't be used all over the house, however, as they are not a means for escaping a home emergency, such as a fire. The next most energy-efficient windows are the ones that swing or crank open because when you close them, the window sash presses against the piece of weather-stripping making an effective seal.

These are just a few things to consider when choosing your next windows. Make sure to factor in performance as well as your financing! Best of luck!
